Setup for material analysis by laser ablation spectroscopy

In addition to laser processing, the setup, containing pulse laser and vacuum chamber, allows direct analysis of the composition of materials. The studies of the basis elements and impurities in solid substances and liquids employ spectral analysis of the laser-induced plasma. The advantages of the proposed approach are as follows:

  • Operating speed – real-time experiments allow 2D surveying of the sample;

  • Sensitivity – the analysis uses only a few cubic micrometers of a substance, emission spectrum features lines typical of a given element at its concentration of tens of ppm.

Components

  • ICCD camera (Deltatekh, Russia)
  • PC2000 - portable fiber-optic spectrometer (Ocean Optics, USA)
  • CCD array

Applications

  • In situ laser ablation diagnostics, analysis of alloys, and testing of the metallurgical formulas;

  • Analysis of the ancient artifacts (items made of metal or ceramics);

  • Analysis of the geological samples and the samples from boreholes.
